The death came a day after the US military reported that two other soldiers had been killed, bringing the overall toll in the Iran war to 17. The rising casualty count underscores the mounting cost of the conflict for US forces stationed across the region.
The Pentagon said operations in the area continue and that disposing of unexploded ordnance is a routine but hazardous procedure. Officials cautioned that similar incidents could recur depending on how the conflict develops.
