Japan and US to invest 1 billion dollars in 'Genesis Mission' AI project
According to Nikkei Asia, Japan and the United States have decided to invest 1 billion dollars in a joint artificial intelligence project named 'Genesis Mission'. The project aims to combine scientific research and computational infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific.
Nikkei Asia · Staff WriterAccording to Nikkei Asia, the Japanese government and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) disclosed features of the two-year joint funding programme. Genesis Mission will provide an investment channel for semiconductor compute, datasets for scientific applications of generative AI models and regional research laboratories.
Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoshimoto Akazawa said the programme 'reinforces Asia-Pacific coordination in the race for AI leadership'. White House OSTP Director Michael Kratsios said the project aims to establish 'the compute bridge that lets scientific AI stay ahead of China in most applications'. University of Tokyo AI Research Director Yutaka Matsuo said the programme will be used for materials science, biology and climate modelling in particular.
Nikkei Asia reported that the project will be executed in cooperation with RIKEN and Argonne National Laboratory. Goldman Sachs analyst Toshiya Hari estimated Japanese semiconductor producers could earn 4 to 6 billion dollars in additional annual revenue. Science adviser Heather Wilson said a new subcommittee will be set up in September within the US-Japan science-policy dialogue. Not investment advice.
