Honduras' ex-president Hernández freed pending fraud trial ruling
A Honduran court has rejected prosecutors' request to hold former president Juan Orlando Hernández in pretrial detention, ruling he will face the so-called Pandora II fraud case in freedom, under conditions. The court stressed the decision covers only custody status, not guilt, and no ruling has yet been made on the merits of the case.
A Honduran court ruled on 3 August 2026 to reject prosecutors' request that former president Juan Orlando Hernández be held in pretrial detention. Hernández will instead face the so-called Pandora II fraud case in freedom, subject to conditions set by the court.
The court explicitly stressed that the ruling is not an acquittal. It concerns only the conditions under which the trial will proceed — whether Hernández awaits it in custody or at liberty — and no ruling has yet been issued on the substance of the fraud allegations themselves.
Hernández was previously convicted and imprisoned in a separate drug-trafficking case. The Pandora II development extends uncertainty over the former leader's legal future and is being closely followed across Honduras.
