German authorities launched a major overnight security operation at Leipzig-Halle Airport after an explosives-laden drone was found on the tarmac near a Ukrainian cargo plane, forcing flight diversions and the deployment of a bomb disposal robot. A separate cargo aircraft that aborted its landing also struck an unidentified object mid-air before landing safely.
German authorities launched a major overnight security operation at Leipzig-Halle Airport after an explosives-laden drone was discovered on the tarmac near a parked Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The area was cordoned off and a bomb disposal robot was deployed to examine and neutralize the device.
The airport was partially closed and several flights were diverted to other airports while the operation was underway. In a separate incident, a cargo plane that aborted its landing reported striking an unidentified object mid-air before landing safely elsewhere.
German security officials are investigating who was behind the drone and are treating the incident seriously amid renewed concern that logistics routes supporting Ukraine are increasingly becoming targets on European soil.
