Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh despite death sentence

Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's former prime minister, intends to return to Dhaka despite having been sentenced to death, activists and officials say. The 78-year-old was convicted in absentia by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal of crimes against humanity over a deadly crackdown on protesters during the 2024 uprising that forced her from office.
Hasina fled to India in August 2024 as mass protests swept the capital, ending her fifteen-year tenure as prime minister. She has continued to appear publicly and give statements from exile, rejecting the tribunal's findings, while the interim government in Dhaka has pursued extradition.
Her planned return, reportedly by the end of the year, would test both Bangladesh's justice system and the stability of the interim administration overseeing the country since her departure. It is not yet clear how or when the return would take place.
