Brazil downgrades diplomatic relations with Argentina over Milei's insults
Brazil has downgraded its diplomatic relations with Argentina to chargé d'affaires level, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced on Wednesday. The move will remain in place until Argentine President Javier Milei stops what Vieira described as repeated attacks on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said on Wednesday that Brazil is downgrading diplomatic relations with Argentina to chargé d'affaires level, postponing indefinitely the return of ambassador Julio Glinternick Bitelli to Buenos Aires.
Vieira said the decision responds to a fresh round of remarks by Argentine President Javier Milei against Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, part of a pattern of comments Brasília has repeatedly protested. He said normal relations would resume once Milei stopped what he called repeated insults.
The downgrade comes as Brazil separately accused Washington of interfering in its October presidential election, after the United States revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador there. Analysts say the diplomatic strain with two of Brazil's key partners could complicate trade and coordination on regional issues, given Argentina's status as one of Brazil's largest trading partners.
